Two Minnesota Department of Transportation employees were injured during a crash in a work zone on Interstate 35 just north of Cliff Road on Sunday, according to MnDOT officials.

Fifty-seven-year-old Dennis Scott of Rockford suffered a non-life threatening injury, and 43-year-old Ronald McDeid of Champlain suffered serious injuries, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. Both were taken to area hospitals.

The two workers were placing traffic cones to mark lane closures on northbound I-35W when a vehicle hit the MnDOT truck around 4 p.m, officials say. The lane closure is necessary to give workers room to build a dike to prevent the road from flooding.

"Every day, our employees put on their boots and hard hats and work to make the roads safer for motorists,” MnDOT Deputy Commissioner and Chief Engineer Sue Mulvihill said. “It is critical that drivers remember that public employees have a right to return home safely to their families at the end of their shift.”

The driver of the vehicle involved had no apparent injuries, according to the state patrol.
