A man is in custody for the wrong way crash that backed up traffic on Interstate 494 in Richfield Sunday afternoon.
The crash happened on eastbound I-494 near Lyndale Avenue around 12:15 p.m., Minnesota Department of Transportation cameras showed. The location is just east of Interstate 35W.
Bloomington police say the crash stemmed from a police chase. Police were called to the area of American Boulevard and Portland Avenue in Bloomington on a man suspected of criminal sexual conduct.
Police tried to make a traffic stop, but the man refused, police say. At one point, they were able to disable the vehicle, but the suspect took off again.
The man made his way to the Nicollet Avenue ramp, drove into oncoming traffic and then onto the highway.
The suspect's Dodge Durango collided with two cars on eastbound I-494, police say. He then crossed the median onto westbound I-494, where he crashed into a vehicle that had skidded to a stop.
Only minor injuries were reported.
