A man has been charged with criminal vehicular homicide and open bottle in connection with a hit-and-run that injured a woman and killed her unborn baby last month in Prior Lake.

Scott County prosecutors said 30-year-old Eric Joseph Healy was driving when his pickup hit a sedan with a driver who was five months pregnant. He and a passenger then fled the scene on foot, leaving the keys in the ignition, radio on and an open bottle of rum on the seat.

Officers were called around 4:21 a.m. Saturday, May 31, to a two-vehicle crash near County Road 21 and Franklin Trail in Prior Lake where they found an empty pickup and a sedan where a woman was sitting. Police said the woman was visibly injured and said she was pregnant and experiencing abdominal pain.

The woman, 31 year-old Tam Huynh-Johnson, was wearing her seatbelt and told police she was driving to work at the time of the crash. She told police she didn't see any cars coming and started to make a left turn, and then she was hit.

Paramedics treated the woman on-site before she went home with her husband. She reported feeling ill, experiencing pain on the right side of her body and vomiting.

Huynh-Johnson moved here from Vietnam to start a family. "I and my husband waiting for baby and no baby boy, but I don't understand what happened with me, I don't understand," Huynh-Johnson said.

She went to the hospital around 3:30 p.m. where doctors performed an ultra sound and determined that her baby boy was dead.

The criminal complaint said that Healy and a male friend walked to a nearby apartment building after the crash where they stayed with the friend’s girlfriend.

The girlfriend told police that the two had arrived around 4 a.m. on May 31. She said her boyfriend had injuries and that she smelled alcohol on his breath.

According to the girlfriend, Healy was supposed to be a designated driver on the night of the crash. She said her boyfriend told her he did not remember crashing and thought that someone dragged him out of the pickup. Healy told her his pickup was totaled and that they "took off." He said he knew police were looking for him.

Police arrested Healy on Thursday, June 5.

Healy has been convicted for driving under the influence in 2007, open bottle in 2005 and underage drinking and driving in 2003.
