The Minnesota Vikings made a strong push to convince Major League Soccer (MLS) that the new Vikings stadium is the best choice for a new MLS franchise.

The Vikings and the University of Minnesota announced Wednesday they are in a partnership to host an Aug. 2 soccer match between teams from England and Greece as part of a larger international tournament.

Vikings’ Spokesperson Lester Bagley emphasized the one-match event will help highlight the popularity of soccer in the Twin Cities. He also stated it would be a great opportunity to showcase Minneapolis as the perfect place for a new MLS franchise as well.

Bagley says the new Vikings stadium will offer fans a great "indoor-outdoor" experience along with great seating that will put fans "right on top of the action", even though the stadium probably would not be sold out for soccer matches.

Bagley would not comment on efforts by former United Health CEO Bill McGuire and Twins' owner, Jim Pohlad, to beat the Vikings to the punch and land an MLS franchise for an outdoor stadium that could be built in Minneapolis on a site known as the Farmer's Market.

Bagley says the Vikings are only focused on their product and the strengths of their organization. He adds they are not concerned about what other people may, or may not, be doing to also bid on an MLS franchise.
