A man who police say was involved in multiple gang-related drive-by shootings in St. Paul last fall was charged Friday.
Ramsey County prosecutors charged Ramone Davay Smaller, 21, with 10 counts: four charges of second degree assault, three of drive-by discharge of a firearm, two of crime committed for benefit of a gang and one for the dangerous discharge of firearm.
Smaller is already in prison after pleading guilty to third-degree attempted murder.
Police say Smaller was involved in several drive-by shootings where shots were fired at houses with one or more residents inside.
Witnesses identified the shooters and/or vehicle in some of the incidents. Police were able to link the incidents to Smaller after he took the vehicle witnesses identified to Harmon Glass in Roseville. He told technicians the “window was shot out.”
The complaint said the two gangs involved have been feuding due to a robbery of marijuana from Kaleef Barnes. Police said Smaller is facing third-degree attempted murder charges after he shot Barnes seven times on July 6, 2013.
While police were investigating a shooting, they discovered Ruby Diaz, a St. Paul police officer, had a relationship with Smaller. Authorities say she sent him money under a different name.
On Friday, Diaz was charged with three counts of forgery.
