The Minnesota Wild have announced the multi-year contract extension for Mike Yeo.
Wild General Manager Chuck Fletcher made the official announcement at a press conference Friday.
"It is a contract extension that was richly earned," Fletcher said.
According to Fletcher, Yeo was asked to do two things when he was originally hired: win hockey games and develop young players.
Fletcher said Yeo has done just that, leading the Wild to the second round of playoffs for only the second time in franchise history.
"Today is an important step for our franchise to re-sign Mike to continue to build upon the success that Mike and his staff this past season," Fletcher said.
Yeo said he is thrilled for the opportunities given to him by the Wild franchise including owner Craig Leipold to be a successful coach.
"The team we have right now, we feel very confident in, not only with where we are but where we are going," Yeo said.
Yeo said he had two goals in mind when he began coaching the Wild three years ago. "My goal was, one, to create an identity for our hockey team and, two, to create a culture," Yeo said. "I believe we have taken big steps towards both of those things."
Yeo admits he made mistakes in the past and said he strives to continue improving both as a coach and as a team to reach the Wild's ultimate goal. "The next step for us is to continue to come out next year and chase our goal, "Yeo said. "We have an end goal in mind and that is to bring a Stanley Cup to the State of Hockey."
Exact details of the contract have not yet been announced.
