Are you considering planting trees to help spruce up the yard?
Home and garden guru Larry Pfarr has some tips on a few things for you to consider before digging, on this week’s "Get Growing" segment.
He recommends knowing your soil type and how much space you have before you buy.
Pfarr recommends scoring the roots before putting the tree into the ground. He said the hole should be dug three to four times larger than the pot the tree came in.
Once you start filling the soil back in, Pffar said you can add some organic matter to help your tree grow. He also said to keep watering to get all the air pockets out and add fertilizer.
He recommends adding cypress mulch around the base of the tree, which will help keep the weeds down and the soil moisturized.
Pfarr said you should only stake your tree if it starts to lean.
As for the best time to get out into the garden, KSTP meteorologist Dave Dahl said a good time for work would be from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Rain is in the forecast for most of the day Saturday.
Get Growing airs every Thursday on 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS at 6:30 and 10.
