"Bully breeds" are now going up for adoption in Minneapolis.

A new ordinance allows the public to adopt dogs like pit bulls, Rottweilers and Dobermans from Minneapolis Animal Care and Control for the first time. Before the ordinance, these breeds couldn’t be adopted and the animals would instead be placed with approved rescue group partners.

Minneapolis Animal Care and Control staff members will join Minneapolis City Council Member Lisa Goodman to announce the new adoption initiative on Thursday.

Last year, officials say they put down 152 dogs, nearly half of which were "bully breeds." On average, workers say the dogs stay at the shelter for 21 days.

Goodman says that by turning a dog into a pet they will save the animal’s life as well as the cost of putting them down.

Before the ordinance, Minneapolis Animal Care and Control also never did behavioral testing to determine if a dog was adoptable. Now, new owners can pay an adoption fee and be screened to see if they’re a good fit.

The temperament of the dogs would be tested, including how they behave in the field, their disposition, and how they interact with other animals, Animal Control Officer John Kilner said. Dogs that bite people or other dogs aren’t put up for adoption.
