Synthetic Drugs a Continuing Problem in Minnesota

Charges filed this week in the death of a Woodbury teen who took a synthetic hallucinogen are renewing concerns about the drugs that seem to be gaining popularity in Minnesota.
Authorities say seizures of all types of synthetics have grown exponentially over the last year.
Brian Marquart oversees 22 state-funded gang and drug task forces. He says in 2012, the task forces seized 4,648 grams of synthetic drugs. Last year, that number jumped to over 1 million grams.
Adam Pederson with Minnesota Adult & Teen Challenge says synthetic drug use also seems to be making a comeback among high school students.
Authorities say young people need to be warned that these drugs are not safe, even if manufacturers say they are. Authorities say consumers never know what's in the product.
