A Ramsey County squad car crashed into a building in Vadnais Heights on Thursday night, sparking a fire.

The crash happened at a commercial building in the area of Willow Lake Boulevard and Labore Road around 10 p.m., according to the Ramsey County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities say the deputy was attempting to make a traffic stop but that the suspect vehicle fled southbound on Labore Road. The deputy was trying to catch up to the vehicle when he missed the turn and hit a natural gas line in the building.

The squad's airbag deployed. The deputy who was driving was checked out but appeared to be unharmed, officials say. No one was in the building at the time, and no other injuries were reported.

County Road E was closed at Labore Road as Vadnais Heights firefighters worked to get the flames under control. The fire department contained the fire to just a portion of the building, and Xcel Energy crews were able to shut off the main gas line.

The Minnesota State Patrol is investigating the incident, which is standard procedure.
