For Water Safety: Watch, Wear and Learn

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is urging residents to stay safe while swimming or playing around bodies of water this summer.

Authorities say there are three keys to preventing water emergencies. They are: watch, wear and learn.

The sheriff's office says that in 70 percent of cases where young kids drowned, one or both parents were nearby. Authorities say being nearby isn't enough, and parents need to avoid distraction and watch their children - even if a lifeguard is on duty.

Wearing a life jacket is also important. Weak swimmers or people who can't swim may wear life jackets in pools or any body of water.

And, the sheriff's office recommends that residents learn to swim - and learn proper use of rescue equipment in case there is an emergency.
