Target Center Renovation adds to Twin Cities Building Boom

The Minneapolis City Council unanimously approved a design team and concept Friday for a $97 million renovation of Target Center. 

Work on the home of the Minnesota Timberwolves will begin soon and take place at the same time as the $975 million Vikings stadium is under construction.

Mortenson Construction was recommended as the general contractor for the Target Center renovation on Friday. Mortenson is headquartered in Minneapolis and also built the original Target Center, Target Field and is now working on the Viking's stadium.

Target Center will get a complete exterior and interior makeover. The exterior will feature a signature glass atrium facing First Avenue, new entrances and exits, all new seats, a new scoreboard and several new gathering spaces for fans inside the arena.

The City of Minneapolis, which owns the building, will pay $48.5 million for the renovation. The Timberwolves and Lynx will pay $43 million and AEG, which manages the building, will pay $5.5 million.
