No one was hurt after a school bus caught fire on Interstate 94 in Maplewood on Tuesday afternoon.
The bus was engulfed in flames on an exit ramp off I-94 eastbound at Century Avenue around 3 p.m. Black plumes of smoke could be seen billowing out of all of the bus windows. Witnesses said it looked like the fire started under the hood.
The bus was rolling toward a Maplewood fire engine parked near the end of the ramp. Firefighters were able to get the truck out of the fiery bus's path.
Only the bus driver was on the bus, Minnesota State Patrol spokesman Eric Roeske said. The driver was able to get off the bus unharmed.
The fire was put out around 3:30 p.m.
The state patrol is investigating the cause of the fire, Roeske said. Preliminary information suggests the fire began in the engine compartment, Roeske said.
Exit ramp MN 120 was closed, the Minnesota Department of Transportation said.
The bus is used by North St. Paul-Maplewood-Oakdale School District.
