The "Click It or Ticket" campaign is back to remind drivers to buckle up before taking off.

The Minnesota State Patrol started putting extra emphasis on drivers wearing seat belts Monday. In Minnesota, all drivers and passengers are required to be buckled.

A ticket can cost between $25 and $100.

Statistics show more than 40 percent of people who were killed in a car crash in the past five years were not wearing a seat belt, despite almost 95 percent of residents buckling up. In 2013 alone, 94 people died and another 1,668 people not wearing seat belts were injured, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety.

Officers said airbags are not effective without a seat belt.

Officials also said three out of four child seats are not used correctly. In the past five years, eight children under 8 years old died and 1,105 were injured because they were not properly restrained in their car seats.

In Minnesota, children under 8, or under 4 feet 9 inches, are required to be fastened in a safety or booster seat that meets federal guidelines. Officials said it is recommended children under 13 ride in the back seat.

Officials said it is important for parents to set an example for their children to always wear a seat belt.

More statistics from 2009 to 2013 show 237 of 587 people killed while not wearing a seat belt were between 15 and 29 years old. Nearly 64 percent of drunk drivers killed were not buckled, the data showed.
