A grand jury indicted two St. Paul men on murder charges after investigators uncovered new evidence about a shooting in 1999, Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said Friday.

According to investigators, 32-year-old Earl Vang of St. Paul and 39-year-old Tou Lu Yang shot and killed 18-year-old Miguel McElroy and wounded his father, Curtis Campbell, near a store in Minneapolis at 24th and Lyndale avenues on July 9, 1999.

Police describe the case as a drug deal gone wrong.

Yang had been convicted on several counts, including aiding and abetting second-degree murder, in 1999. He made several attempts to appeal the case.

Last summer, a judge ordered a new trial for Yang based on ineffective assistance of counsel, a witnesses' new statement and new evidence.

Vang was arrested last week after investigators were able to establish him as the second shooter, authorities said. He posted $20,000 bail.

Vang's attorney, Earl Gray, says his client will plead not guilty. He's free on bail.
