Next week some people living in Cottage Grove will hear warning sirens and safety instructions, but it's only for a test.

A local company will demonstrate a new outdoor mass notification system designed for school campuses.

Conexspace will demonstrate an OmniCast speaker.

Invented by the U.S. Navy to communicate with ships without radios, the OmniCast speaker is now starting to be used on campuses across the country.

The company says the speaker won't hurt your hearing, and it can send messages up to one mile.

"It has the ability over a vast area to very clearly and concisely communicate information, life threatening information of all types," said Tim Nordquist with Conexspace.

Up to three messages per day will be broadcast through the speaker next week.

The company sent letters to its neighbors and nearby businesses notifying them about the test.
