Gophers pitching coach and cancer survivor Todd Oakes has been nominated for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Man and Woman of the Year Award. As a nominee, Oakes was asked to raise funds for blood cancer research for 10 weeks.

The competition ends Friday, and the male and female nominees who raise the most funds will earn the title of Man and Woman of the Year.

Oakes has raised funds through a "Strikeout Cancer" campaign where pledges were made for every Gophers strikeout in April. Donations were also gathered at the team's home game against Nebraska.

Twins pitcher Glen Perkins also contributed to the cause, donating $100 for each of his 16 strikeouts he recorded through the month of April. He gave an additional $900, and the Minnesota Twins and the players' union each matched his total donation of $2,500.

Oakes was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in June of 2012 but was able to return to coaching in Spring of 2013 and is now in full remission.
