A 24-year-old woman who admitted she lied to a grand jury about raising money for men who left Minnesota to join a terrorist group in Somalia has been sentenced to three years of probation.

Saynab Hussein was sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Minneapolis on one count of perjury.

Prosecutors asked for at least two years in prison, saying she was firmly rooted in a conspiracy in which young men left Minnesota to join al-Shabab. The FBI has said the case was one of the largest efforts to recruit U.S. fighters to a foreign terrorist organization. The investigation is ongoing.

Hussein's attorneys sought probation, saying she was naive and scared.

Hussein now lives in Tennessee. She told the court she was remorseful and asked for a second chance.
