You may have never heard of the University of Minnesota's Formula Team, but engineering employers in the area have. The team is called Gopher Motorsports and it's essentially an extracurricular club.
The club and car are getting ready to travel to Michigan to participate in an international competition, facing off against other formula teams from 120 different countries.
Kieran McCabe is the club's president. He says the team's 2014 car is ready, "I'm pretty confident. We've been driving it for a month and a half now, almost two months, and I think that's the most driving time we've gotten in the last 10 years. So we're looking good."
Chief Engineer Trevor Carlson will also be one of the team's drivers. He agrees that the car is in prime condition, "Especially after today. This is the best car we've had in years."
The competition includes timed track trials, as well panel interviews of the crew that designed and built the car.
McCabe says the team has historically finished in the top 30, but hopes this year to break into the top 20.
