Former University of Minnesota Quarterback Philip Nelson was arrested for assault early Sunday morning in Mankato, according to police.

Police say 20-year-old Nelson was booked into Blue Earth County Jail at 2:44 a.m. The Mankato West graduate is facing third degree assault charges.

Minnesota State, Mankato, football player and Mankato East graduate Isaac Kolstad was in critical condition Sunday night at Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato. Police say Kolstad was found near the intersection of Cherry and South Front Streets around 2 a.m.

Police say Nelson was located on scene and taken into custody shortly after for probable cause assault. Another person is being sought by police.

A candlelight vigil will was held for Kolstad at the MSU Mankato field house.  Dozens of people had candles in their hands and support for Kolstad all around them.

"We're all going through it together, " Kevin Buisman, the MSU Mankato Athletic Director, said. "Maverick football is part of Isaac, and Isaac is a part of  Maverick football."

Isaac’s family has issued the following statement:

"We are extremely grateful for the outpouring of support we have received during this difficult time.  Isaac is a very strong and determined young man, who is dearly loved by his family and friends. We would respectfully ask for your continued prayers.

We would also ask members of the news media and others to respect our request and need for privacy at this time.  We have requested that no further information (beyond his medical condition) be released.  Thank you for your understanding and continued thoughts and prayers for Isaac, his wife and children, and all others who are involved in this situation."

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver and former Mankato Maverick Adam Thielen sent the following tweet in response to reports of Kolstad's condition.

Nelson played football at Mankato West, winning Minnesota's Mr. Football Award. Nelson was also named ESPN Gatorade Minnesota Player of the Year and AP Minnesota Player of the Year in 2011.

Nelson, a top recruit coming out of the 2012 graduating senior class, played football at Minnesota for two seasons. He played in 12 games this past season, starting nine of them.

In January, Nelson announced his transfer to Rutgers University in New Jersey. He threw for 1,306 yards, nine touchdowns and six interceptions while completing 50.5 percent of his passes in two seasons at Minnesota. Nelson, who had 93 carries for 364 yards and six touchdowns, said Rutgers offered him a more passing-friendly offense.

Nelson has two years of eligibility left, but is not eligible to play this fall due to the transfer per NCAA rules.

Rutgers will join the Big Ten Conference this summer.
