Saturday is a big day on the Minnesota calendar; it's the fishing opener - specifically the walleye and northern pike opener.

The Governor's Fishing Opener will be held on Gull Lake this year at Grandview Lodge in the Brainerd-Nisswa area.

The governor shouldn't have problems with ice on Gull Lake, for the most part the lake appears to be free of ice. For Lake Mille Lacs the northern part is looking good, while the southern part still had some ice on it Monday. Check ice out dates here.

As for bait, KSTP called around to figure out if there would be a shortage like last year. S & W Bait in Brainerd said they might run short on everything except night crawlers. Hansen's in White Bear Lake said they're in pretty good shape right now, with more supply coming later this week. Wayzata Bait and Tackle said they were running low on leeches, shiners and other minnows.

You might want to call around.

KSTP’s Bill Lunn will be in Nisswa on Friday to bring live coverage of the opener.

Weather looks to be pretty good. KSTP meteorologist Dave Dahl said temperatures will be in the low 60s, there should be very little wind and no rain.
