Ice-covered lakes are making for a rough start for Wisconsin's fishing opener Saturday.

Not a lot of licenses were sold ahead of the much-anticipated day for anglers. In an average year, up to 500 licenses are sold the day before the opener at one Superior gas station.

This year is not the same.

"I think yesterday we sold probably 10, 12 licenses is all and today I haven't sold a license," said Dave Uhlenkott, Holiday gas station manager.

Next Saturday is the 2014 Minnesota Governor’s Fishing Opener, which is on Gull Lake. The ice there is just starting to melt.

Gov. Scott Walker says he didn't catch anything during his trip to northwestern Wisconsin. Every year Wisconsin's governor goes fishing to kick off the season. Walker's office released a statement early Saturday afternoon saying Walker traveled to Balsam Lake this year. The statement doesn't say whether he caught anything.

The governor told delegates at the Republican state convention Saturday in Milwaukee that he was on the lake earlier that morning in 38-degree temperatures and caught nothing.

Gov. Mark Dayton will be accompanied by a well-known fishing guide next week. Ray Gildow, a U.S. Coast Guard-licensed captain, has been a professional fishing guide in the Brainerd Lakes area for 25 years. He's been chosen to guide the governor throughout the fishing opener on May 10.

Toby Kvalevog will fish with Lt. Governor Yvonne Prettner Solon. He’s been fishing for 35 years and has been a guide on Gull Lake for 12 years.
