One year ago Friday, Mandy Matula disappeared.
The 24-year-old was the third Twin Cities metro-area woman to go missing in five months that year.
Six months after she disappeared, her remains were found by a hiker at a park in Stearns County. The only suspect was her ex-boyfriend, David Roe, who killed himself outside the Eden Prairie police station before authorities could question him.
The University of Minnesota Duluth Department of Intercollegiate Athletics recently set up a fund in memory of Matula, who was a starting pitcher and utility player with the Bulldogs from the 2007 through 2010 seasons. The UMD Softball 1 Four Mandy Matula Fund was established in partnership with Matula's family, and her No. 14 jersey will be retired this spring.
The Minnesota Coalition for Battered Women says at least 25 women died from domestic violence last year, including Mandy. It’s the highest total since 2001.
