More than 220 soldiers from the Minnesota Army National Guard's St. Paul-based 34th Combat Aviation Brigade are getting ready for a year-long deployment to Kuwait.
On Friday, soldiers and families gathered at the St. Paul National Guard Aviation Support Facility before they headed to the Camp Ripley Training Center in Little Falls. They will spend two weeks completing training.
"This pre-mobilization training is important because it brings the whole unit together to train and finalize our deployment plan," said Lt. Col. Greg Fix, commander 2nd Battalion, 147th Assault Helicopter Battalion.
Training will include battle drills designed to exercise all staff sections of the 34th Combat Aviation Brigade, qualify with weapons, as well as maintain physical and mental fitness. At the completion of training, leaders will ensure the military unit is ready, trained and equipped to succeed on deployment.
The soldiers will deploy in June in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
