A new scam is impacting Xcel Energy customers. It's an elaborate and aggressive one, which involves both phone calls and emails, according to Xcel.

Every month so far this year about 100 people reported they've been targets of the scam. It involves someone claiming to be an Xcel Energy representative, trying to collect a missed payment.

They threaten to turn off someone's power if they don't get a payment immediately, usually in the form of a pre-paid credit card.

Xcel says they will send a notice in writing to customers before power is ever turned off.

The scam has become so much of a problem; Xcel has set up a hotline.

Xcel says, as a rule of thumb, if you feel like there is any possibility that you are engaging with an impersonator, trust your instincts, stop the conversation and call 1-800-895-4999 to report the incident immediately.
