Minneapolis cab drivers want the City to regulate ride share companies like "Uber-X" and "Lyft" the same as they're regulated.
Hundreds turned out to a Minneapolis City Council meeting to voice support for cab drivers and the ride share companies as well. Cab drivers say they simply want a level playing field and would like to see ride shares pay licensing fees and commercial insurance like they have to under City regulations.
Without the same regulations, cab drivers say ride shares have an unfair advantage and it could cause some cab drivers to lose their jobs.
Companies like "Uber-X" and "Lyft" also turned out for the meeting. They told council members they are not opposed to regulations, but they want them to be fair and not overburdening because they are not the same business model as cab companies.
The Community Development and Regulatory Services Committee did not take any action. This was the first public hearing on the issue.
A vote, by the Committee, is not expected for at least two weeks on a proposed ordinance that would regulate ride shares similar to cab companies in Minneapolis.
