A man is in serious condition at Regions Hospital after leading police on a chase and slamming into a brick wall in Maplewood at 90 mph Wednesday morning.

Metro Transit Police say 40-year-old Jeffrey Richardson led police on a chase starting around 2:30 a.m. when they tried to pull him over. According to a police report, Richardson was told to remove his keys from the ignition because of his driving conduct, but he refused and left the scene.

Richardson led police on Interstate 35W, then Highway 36 in Roseville. It ended at the intersection of County Road B and Arcade Street in Maplewood, police say.

Police say the truck reached speeds of 90 mph on city streets and was pursued by Metro Transit Police, Roseville Police, Maplewood Police and the Minnesota State Patrol before crashing into a brick retaining wall and tree.

The airbag on the vehicle deployed. Richardson was extricated from the truck and taken to the hospital.
