The University of Minnesota baseball team will play under the lights for the first time at its new Siebert Field stadium on Friday night.

The Foundation for Minnesota Baseball and the University announced Tuesday that the Siebert Field Lighting Ceremony will take place before the Gophers' game against Penn State Friday evening. The game starts at 6:35 p.m.

Siebert Field was renovated and opened for baseball again last April. Lighting was not included in the stadium upgrades.

Donors helped raise $500,000 for the lighting system, which was donated by the Foundation.

Longtime journalist Sid Hartman will "throw the switch" to turn the lights on once again at Siebert Field.

"We are excited to play baseball at night this season, and to share this opportunity with other teams in the state," Gophers head coach John Anderson said in a statement. "The vision has always been to make Siebert Field the center of amateur baseball. The addition of lights will provide more chances for young baseball players to use the ballpark."

Minnesota Director of Athletics Norwood Teague said the donations made the addition of lights happen much sooner than planned, calling it a "fascinated and unexpected gift."

The Gophers (19-16) have 10 games remaining at Siebert Field this season, seven of which will be played at night. Minnesota is 3-5 so far this season at home.
