'Walk with a Doc' Offers Buffalo Residents Free Medical Advice

If you'd like to take some strides in improving your health, a new program put on by Allina Health might be the right fit for you. It's all about getting fit while walking with a local physician to answer all your health questions.

We all know an apple a day keeps the doctor away, but every once in a while you just want to pick the brain of a doctor. Buffalo Hospital, along with Allina Health, is hosting "Walk with a Doc" every month through the fall.

Dr. Renae Dorrity of Allina believes it's best to use as little of medication as possible, and that often walking is the best treatment.

"What I love about walking is, I don't have a medication that will treat or prevent diabetes, heart disease, high-blood pressure, cholesterol, osteoporosis, in a single pill," Dorrity said. "Exercise is the single treatment that will treat all those things that cost of billions of dollars every year."

Dorrity also said by lacing up your shoes and spending time with a doctor each month, patients can avoid paying their co-pay, while still getting sound medical advice.

Some of those little things that they want advice on but not to spend the money to get the advice on.

These "Walk with a Doc" events are held on the third Saturday of each month at Sturges Park in Buffalo:

  • May 17: Nutrition 101 with Annette Fideldy, R.D.
  • June 21: But Exercise Hurts!! How to Avoid, Minimize, and Treat Delayed Muscle Soreness with Glenn Nemec, M.D.
  • July 19: Dehydration and Summer Safety with D. Brent Simons, MD
  • August 16: Apps and Technology in Diabetes Care with Anne-Marie Lee, M.D.
  • September 20: Healthy Living for Prevention of Gynecologic Disease with Krista Honsey, M.D.
  • October 18: Joint Health with Dana Harms, M.D.
