The Minnesota Legislative Auditor is worried MNsure is not doing enough to make sure people who are placed on Minnesota Care, or Medical Assistance, have incomes that qualify for the taxpayer-supported programs.

"I have a team of auditors down there at MNsure right now to audit and assess what is going on," Legislative Auditor James Nobles tells 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS.

Nobles says it is the legal responsibility of MNsure to make sure only qualified, low-income people are placed on Minnesota Care and Medical Assistance.

Right now, it appears there are documented cases where people with plenty of assets to pay for private health insurance are being placed on public, taxpayer-supported programs like Minnesota Care and Medical Assistance.

"It is an ongoing problem that MNsure was supposed to fix, but right now it looks like they do not have the computer system they need to do electronic verification of income," Nobles said.

He said he hopes to have his audit finished by August.
