Twin Cities Restaurants Forced to Raise Pork Prices

Bacon lovers - be warned. The cost of the salty meat treat is going up soon all because of a nasty virus found in pigs.

"This is only one day's worth," said Jason Mann as he opened up the smoker at Hickory Hut in St. Paul. It was full of pork. Hickory Hut sells about 2,000 pounds of it every week.

Next week though, they're raising prices.

"Our prices go up, the consumer prices go up. It's a bad deal for everyone," Mann said.

Over at Clancey's Meats in Minneapolis, it's a similar story. In the past two weeks, they've raised their pork prices by 10 percent.

"Ten percent is a substantial increase and we needed to pass that onto the customers this time," explained Kristin Tombers.

The Minnesota Pork Board says it comes down to supply and demand. Right now a virus called Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea is killing millions of piglets across the country. It doesn't affect humans so there are no safety concerns, but it means pork is at a premium.

As Mann put it, "what the supplier wants for it is what we have to pay for it."

So for now, you can still find all of your favorite pork dishes. Just be ready to dig a little deeper into the old piggy bank, so to speak, to pay for them.
