A man was rescued from a burning car by two Maplewood Police officers Friday night.

Police said the man got into a car accident near the intersection of Larpenteur and White Bear Lake avenues around midnight. His car ended up on its side, and started on fire in the Walgreens parking lot, according to police.

Officers Clint Abel and Jason Marino arrived on the scene and heard the man yelling for help. His arms were stretched out of the driver's side window. They each grabbed an arm of the man inside and were able to pull him from the burning vehicle, police said.

He was taken to Regions Hospital with extensive burns to his face and lower body.

Abel and Marino will be recognized at a future Maplewood City Council meeting and given the department's Life Saving Award. A citizen will also be recognized for her role in giving aid to the victim.

The officers were not hurt.

The man's name has not been released.
