The city of Minneapolis submitted a bid to host the 2018 Super Bowl on Tuesday. The bid has been years in the making, but the last few weeks have been busy as the city prepared its final pitch.

The team has a huge binder they’ve been putting together, which was overnighted to the NFL with no time to spare.

Only three final cities are still in the running, but Minneapolis still has a lot to prove to be chosen, which is why the Meet Minneapolis staff members worked to put together more than 150 pages of documents outlining why the Super Bowl should come to Minneapolis.

The team is touting the Twin Cities metro’s light rail system and the fact that we’ll have the newest stadium in the league once the new Vikings stadium is finished.

Meet Minneapolis CEO Melvin Tennant says those factors have been “impressive and appealing” to the NFL. He also says the Super Bowl will create jobs during a time of the year when the city is short on large events.
“I'm excited about the fact that a lot of people will be able to go to work and be able to support their families even better,” Tennant said. “I think, by in large, this is going to really put us on the map as being a city that can be considered for any major event that's available on the face of the earth.”

The other cities in the running are Indianapolis and New Orleans, two cities that have recently hosted the Super Bowl. New Orleans has hosted 10 games, most recently in 2013. Indianapolis hosted its first Super Bowl in 2012.

The Vikings revealed some details of the bid, which included a list of 48 potential venues throughout Minneapolis, St. Paul and Bloomington for various activities. The NFL Experience, a football theme park set up at the Super Bowl site each year, would likely be held at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

The committee will meet with league staff in New York later this month. The final bid is due May 7, and a presentation will be made to NFL owners in Atlanta two weeks later.

The 2018 Super Bowl will be played on Feb. 4, 2018.
