A tornado in western Minnesota, icy conditions in Duluth and a thunderstorm in the Twin Cities metro created a diverse and stormy climate across Minnesota on Monday.

Now, winter is making a comeback.

While most of us slept, the winds shifted to the west, and winter-like weather was swept back into the area. Morning Chief Meteorologist Ken Barlow says occasional light snow and drizzle in the Twin Cities will cause a few slick areas Tuesday morning before quickly tapering.

Eighteen inches of fresh snow whipped up by winds of 50 miles per hour might seem like a cruel April Fool's joke, but for residents of northwestern Minnesota it's all too real.

Highway 1 from Warren to the North Dakota border was closed, and Marshall County sheriff's officials advised against travel as a semitrailer and two other vehicles were stranded in the middle of the road. Polk County officials pulled snowplows off the roads Monday afternoon as conditions deteriorated for the safety of the drivers.

The National Weather Service reported 18 inches of new snow at Thief River Falls and Warren and 16 inches in Salol in Roseau County.

Sunshine will return Tuesday afternoon, but Ken says the cold air will stick around as well, and the cooler-than-average weather will be here for the rest of this first week of April.

Ken also says another round of rain and snow is likely on Thursday and may become all snow Thursday night before tapering off later on Friday.

The wild weather comes after Sunday's highs hit 59 degrees at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, which is the warmest day we've seen since Oct. 17.
