A caravan of U.S. Coast Guard vessels ready to help get lakers across the icy Great Lakes arrived in the Duluth port Monday.
According to KSTP sister station WDIO, the USCGC Mackinaw, along with two smaller ice cutters, arrived in the harbor around 6 p.m.
They will be heading to Two Harbors on Wednesday morning to help lead lakers filled with iron ore down to the steel mills on the lower Great Lakes.
This is the first time since World War Two that a caravan of cutters has been needed to escort ships due to the volume of ice.
The Soo Locks open at 12 a.m. Friday.
