It's super puppy training time at the Can Do Canines facility in New Hope. Volunteers like Lisa Hathy are running a group of pups through specific drills.

"We're teaching them in fun ways how to sit, how to do down, how to spin," she said.

Each and every one of the dogs is being trained for a higher calling. The pups will eventually assist folks with disabilities like hearing loss, autism and seizures.

In this case, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Executive Director Al Peters says the non-profit currently has more puppies than they have short-term foster homes for the dogs.

"We have 28 that we are looking for homes right now and we expect to have 30 more before the year's over," he said.

The need is urgent for foster homes because there are 180 people waiting for assistance dogs.

"They're going to be giving the dog good manners, teaching them some basic skills. The dog will be with them from the time it's about 8-10 weeks old until it's about 16 months old," Peters said.

Hathy has previously volunteered to help train three litters. This will be her first time taking a pup home.

"I am terrified of getting attached, but it's all for a great cause," Hathy said.
