Deadline Nears for Minn. Tax Relief Plan Without a Deal

It appears increasingly unlikely that lawmakers will meet a deadline to send Gov. Mark Dayton a tax relief bill this week.

The Senate is still assembling a bill to match up with an already approved $500 million House version. Failure to adopt one soon could mean taxpayers have to file amended returns to reap tax cuts.

Senate Tax Committee Chairman Rod Skoe says he hopes to pass a bill by the end of the week. But it will likely differ from one the House approved, meaning more steps to get it to Dayton.

One big question is whether businesses subject to new sales taxes will see those disappear and be reimbursed for taxes they already paid. Also unresolved is which individual income tax breaks would begin immediately versus next year.
