A man is dead after a fire broke out at a motel in Chanhassen early Monday morning.

The fire started around 2 a.m. at the Brookside Motel on Flying Cloud Drive near Highway 101.

When crews arrived, they discovered a cabin fully engulfed in flames and learned an older man was trapped inside, the Carver County Sheriff's Office said.

Human remains were found inside the unit, authorities said.

It took nearly a half hour to get the fire under control, according to the Chanhassen Fire Chief. He said one other person escaped safely.

Officials also say there were smoke detectors in both cabins but no sprinkler systems.

The victim was transported to the Midwest Regional Medical Center Examiners Office. He has not yet been identified, and the cause is still under investigation, authorities said.
