A final 3-pointer and putback at the buzzer didn't fall as Maranatha's comeback fell just short Friday in the Boys' State Basketball Tournament Class A semifinals. Rushford-Peterson's defense held for the final 1:50 to preserve the 53-51 victory at Target Center, sending them to the championship game against Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa on Saturday afternoon.
Austin O'Hare and Cole Kingsley led the way for Rushford-Peterson, scoring 14 and 13 points, respectively. O'Hare's jumper with 1:26 to play in the second half proved to be the difference.
Josh Goldschmit led Maranatha Christian with 13 points in the loss.
Rushford-Peterson shot 51.2 percent from the field compared to Maranatha's 40 percent and only committed eight turnovers.
The game wasn't very close early, as Rushford-Peterson opened a 14 point advantage late in the first half. Maranatha slowly chipped away in the second, and had multiple chances to take the lead in the closing minutes.
Rushford-Peterson had two chances to put the game away at the free throw line, but missed them both, giving Maranatha one last shot.
