Holy Family used smothering defense to beat Cloquet 63-41 Wednesday afternoon in a Boys' State Basketball Tournament Class 3A quarterfinal.
The Fire (28-2) held Cloquet to 29.2 percent shooting from the floor and forced 12 turnovers.
Holy Family countered by shooting 42.9 percent in a game that was tight early on.
Holy Family took the lead for good in the closing minutes of the first half, turning a 19-18 deficit into a 32-19 lead with a 14-0 run that spanned over five minutes.
Junior center Justin Dahl's 15 points and 10 rebounds powered Holy Family. The 6-foot-11-inch force also had three blocked shots.
Senior forward Joe Hanel added 14 points and nine rebounds, making 6 of 9 from the field.
The Lumberjacks were led by Dillon Johnson's 15 points.
Cloquet senior forward Adam Laine added 13 points and a game-high 11 rebounds with three blocked shots as he went toe-to-toe with Dahl down low in a matchup of two imposing big men.
Holy Family will play No. 2 Austin (27-3) on Thursday in the Class 3A Semifinals.
