Asian carp and zebra mussels are a major concern in our state and the University of Minnesota hopes a bonding bill will help continue their study.

The school says its Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center is falling apart and in desperate need of an upgrade. The center can't study adult Asian carp and zebra mussels because their eggs and larvae could get pass the faulty filter system.

Researchers are hoping to get $6 million in the University's higher education bonding bill request to upgrade the center.

"If the state is going to get serious, and I sure hope they do about invasive species and the huge threat they pose, then they got to get serious about providing facilities for that effort." said scientific director Peter Sorenson.

If researchers get the funding, they hope to make the improvements at the center by the end of the year.
