The brutal winter has taken a big toll on Minnesota birds.

The Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Roseville is caring for several swans, ducks and loons. The birds are being treated for frostbite on their feet.

Veterinarians said they have had to amputate the webbing on some of the birds' feet in order for them to heal.

Phil Jenni, the center's director, said they've taken in more waterfowl than normal this winter, but not because of the bitter cold.

"For winter waterfowl, it's not the cold," Jenni said. "It's the ice. And once it ices over they lose their food source."

KSTP was told things will get a lot easier for the birds once the ice starts to melt and open water returns.
