A 30-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly shooting an acquaintance at Tom Reid's Hockey City Pub Friday night in St. Paul.
Authorities say Patrick Juetten of Woodbury shot his 28-year-old friend with a .40 caliber handgun, outside the bar around 11:30 p.m. Friday night.
The victim, who has not been identified, was transported to Regions Hospital in St. Paul. The criminal complaint states the bullet broke a rib, pierced the victim's lung and eventually caused extensive damage to his liver.
Authorities said Juetten and the victim went to the same high school, played hockey together and had known each other for most of their lives. The victim said Juetten had called him out of the blue wanting to meet at Tom Reid's.
Witnesses told police Juetten, who had a lanyard with a badge on it, told people at the bar that he was a "detective and he just got off of work." Officers later were told he had taken law enforcement classes at Century College in White Bear Lake.
The victim told investigators Juetten was trying to pass himself off as a cop in order to "rob drug dealers" and said Juetten was trying to get him to go along with the scheme.
When the victim declined Juetten's offer, the victim said Juetten shot him from about two feet away, according to the criminal complaint.
Juetten told police, just before the shooting, he gave his keys to a stranger to get cigarettes out of his vehicle. Juetten claimed his handgun was in the vehicle, according to the complaint.
Juetten claims when the man came back, he had his gun and then shot the victim.
Juetten told police he panicked and left the scene. He said he didn't know what happened to his gun, according to the complaint.
On Sunday morning, Woodbury police found Juetten with his girlfriend in a hotel near his residence and arrested him. The complaint said Juetten's girlfriend told officers she was sleeping on Friday night when Juetten came in "freaked out" because his friend had been shot at the bar.
