A 5.5 mile stretch of Interstate 35E just north of downtown St. Paul was shut down in both directions for a construction project over the weekend.

Although it still looks like there's a lot of work going on, the Minnesota Department of Transportation has reopened that stretch of I-35E in time for the Monday morning commute.

The project will eventually add a MnPASS lane to what's currently known to be a heavily-congested part of the commute.

With all of our damaged interstates and highways throughout the state, people KSTP spoke with are welcoming the work and are happy to deal with the inconvenience.

"I think it's pretty good because the lines back there are pretty messed up and there a lot of accidents," one driver said.

"I think it's nice that they're doing construction because the roads here are pretty bad," another driver said. "It's been like that throughout the many years that I've lived here. So I think that having good roads would be a benefit to all of us."

Although the interstate was reopened by 5 a.m. Monday, the Arlington and the Wheelock bridges will not be ready to reopen any time soon. That work will continue through May.

A recent MnDOT study showed 35 percent of our bridges and more than 50 percent of our highways and interstates are more than 50 years old.
