Amy Senser has been granted approval to begin work release six months early, state officials said Friday.

Senser, the wife of a former NFL player, was convicted of criminal vehicular homicide. Officials at the Minnesota Department of Corrections said Senser had applied - and was subsequently approved - for work release projected to begin April 24.

She will be transferring from the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Shakopee to a work-release facility. Historically, less than 2 percent of offenders commit a new crime while on work release, officials said.

Assuming she complies with the rules and expectations, she will be allowed to leave on supervised release on Oct. 20, her original supervised release date, officials said.

Senser, wife of former Viking-turned restaurateur Joe Senser, had been driving home when she struck 38-year-old Anousone Phanthavong on a freeway exit ramp in Minneapolis while he was refilling the gas tank of his stalled car. She then continued to drive home to Edina.

Senser claimed she thought she had hit a pothole or construction barrier.

She was sentenced to 41 months in prison on two counts of criminal vehicular homicide for leaving the scene of a crime and failing to notify police right away. Senser has been at the facility since July 9, 2012.

Senser had previously tried to appeal her case before the Minnesota Supreme Court, which decided not to hear the case.

The decision meant Senser had exhausted her ability to appeal the case in Minnesota. She could still appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
