Undefeated all season leading into the State Tournament, Luverne's cinderella season came to an end at the hands of 4-time running state runners-up Hermantown.

Nate Pionk' scored 27-seconds into the game as Hermantown never trailed.  Four other Hawks scored in their 6-3 win over the Cardinals in the opening game of the Class A State Hockey Tournament.

For Luverne, it marked a loss in the first-ever State Tournament appearance in the program's 11-year history.

For Hermantown, it was the first step of three they hope to take in ending their "always-the-bridesmaid" streak.

All three periods in the game saw Hermantown score first, a Luverne answer, then another Hawks goal.

Nate Pionk and Tanner Kimball scored for Hermantown around Luverne's Gunnar Olson in the first period for a 2-1 Hawks lead.

Cole Koepke and Luke Jacques provided Hermantown's second period goals, surrounding Olson's second.

Kyle Amundsen and Pionk closed out the scoring for Hermantown. Andrew Verhey scored Luverne's final goal.

Kendall Meyer made 42 saves for Luvurne while Hermantown's Adam Smith made 23 in the victory.

Hermantown advances to the Class A Semifinals on Friday against New Prague.
