St. Louis Park Public Schools has launched an internal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a student after he was found unconscious in a middle school pool.
On Thursday morning, 12-year-old Abdullahi Charif was found unresponsive and not breathing at the bottom of the pool by the gym teacher after a physical education swimming class was wrapping up, according to police.
A school resource officer was in the building and immediately responded to the pool area, where the teacher had pulled the seventh grader out of the pool and was performing CPR.
Charif was taken to the hospital, where he died over the weekend.
According to the district, the internal investigation is under way in addition to an investigation by the St. Louis Park police.
The teacher on duty has been placed on paid administrative leave, and the middle school pool will remain closed.
Fred Pritzker, the attorney representing the family of Charif, is calling on anyone with information about the drowning to contact the St. Louis Park Police Department.
Pritzker says the gym teacher, who was not a certified lifeguard, was the only adult present with as many as 30 seventh graders in the class.
