A woman was able to escape unharmed after a masked man armed with a handgun got into her car and threatened to rape her, according to Maplewood police.

The woman told police she was leaving a fitness club near White Bear Avenue and County Road D around 8 p.m. Sunday. She said she got into her car and a man entered the passenger side door; he was a white man wearing a black ski mask, dark-colored pants and light-colored surgical gloves and was between the ages of 30 and 40, she said.

The man allegedly had a black handgun and threatened to shoot her if she tried to escape. He ordered her to drive to several different locations within the city of Maplewood but seemed to be nervous about being seen at each location, the woman said.

The woman said she talked with the suspect, and he eventually asked to be dropped off near County Road C and White Bear Avenue.

Police say the incident happened about 15 minutes after a similar incident in North St. Paul. In that case, police were called to a carjacking; the victim fled from her car and the suspect drove off with it, police say. The suspect had a similar description as the Maplewood incident.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Maplewood Police Department at 651-767-0640.  Anonymous information can also be sent via text message by texting the keyword MAPLEWOOD and the tip information to Tip411 (847411).
