Snow Removal Trumps Other City Projects in Brooklyn Park

This snowy winter is putting a strain on some cities' resources. Brooklyn Park has already used up 100 percent of its budget on salt, and it's only February; the budget cycle runs through Dec. 31.

Other maintenance issues are getting put off thanks to all the snow that keeps falling.

In Brooklyn Park, as the snow is melted on this warm winter day, a new problem is revealed- potholes.

But this winter has been so snowy all public works efforts have been on snow removal, while other city projects have fallen behind. When crews are busy moving snow, other city concerns take a backseat.

The single focus this year for Brooklyn Park Street Maintenance Superintendent Steve Nauer has been pushing, moving, and maintaining the snow.

"Everything else that we typically do in the winter has pretty much been nonexistent for this winter," Nauer said.

Like those pesky potholes, "We just don't have the personnel to get those because those are the same guys dealing with the snow," said Nauer.

And the replacement of old signs is hitting a dead end too. "We've got the signs, we just haven't had time to put any of them up this year," Nauer said.

For the City of Richfield plowing takes precedence over pruning the city's boulevard trees.

"We remove them, trim them, manage them, and we do that in the winter, and so we haven't had much time to do that this year," Mike Eastling, City of Richfield Public Works Director, said.

And as public works departments across the metro countdown until the spring thaw, Brooklyn Park is also counting on the 2,500 tons of salt they have to last all year.

"That needs to last us until the end of December. If you can tell me what the weather will be I'll tell you whether or not it will last," Nauer said.

But Nauer has hope, "The sun's getting up higher, today is a beautiful day, sure we're going to get some more snow, but we're going to see the light at the end of the tunnel,"

Then he said his crew will be back out there tackling different tasks.

If you see potholes, check with your city, most cities have a way for you to report it.
