Phone Scam Spreading in the Metro

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a recent scam popping up across the metro.

They say someone is calling and asking for donations to the Police Protective Fund and are seeking credit card numbers and money. The Washington County Sheriff's Office and other local law enforcement agencies do not cold call residents seeking donations.

Officials are urging residents to never give out bank account, credit card numbers, or transfer funds over the phone.

In at least one instance, a resident received a letter with the same premise. 

St. Paul police are warning of a similar scam.

Residents should contact their local police department or sheriff's office to report any similar crimes.  

Recording the phone number and/or keeping documentation from the call or paperwork is helpful in a law enforcement investigation.
